Wolfman Triathlon a Great Success, May Be Expanded in Future

The Wolfman Triathlon, a two-decade tradition in eastern Langlade County, is evolving into a weekend-long celebration of silent sports and camaraderie.
The event drew about 300 competitors, assisted by 140 volunteers to the Gardner Dam Boy Scout Camp at Langlade Friday and Saturday, a new location design, organizers said, to allow it to grow and mature into a larger event.
The Wolfman has been staged for 23 years, starting with a three-mile whitewater paddle followed by a 13-mile mountain bike ride and concluding with a 3 3/4 mile trail run.
The event has always drawn a corps of enthusiasts and their support crews and this year organizers expanded a bit, moving the location to the spacious boy scout camp, which allowed for plenty of camping, adding food trucks in addition to the traditional pig roast, and expanding the musical lineup to including a Friday night band and Saturday night open mic.
“We’re creating more of a festival atmosphere,” organizer Pat McCabe said, explaining that the hopes are to increase the number of
vendors offering all types of outdoor gear and related equipment.
The Wolfman could not take place with a cadre of volunteers—roughly 140 this year—who were treated to free food and refreshments and hundreds of thank yous from participants.
“You need to keep your volunteers happy,” McCabe said. They also collected checks from the Wolfman for their organizations.
Participating groups included Antigo Boy Scouts, Elcho Cross-Country Ski Club, Antigo Swim Club, Antigo Bike & Ski Club, White Lake Area Historical Society, Troutland Rescue, Langlade Area Mountain Bike Association, Lakeland Area Mountain Bike Organization, Langlade County Sled Dog Club, and the Wisconsin Bike Patrol.
Earning top honors this year was 33-year-old Benjamin Neubauer with an elapsed time of 1:15:18 with 43-year-old John Holtan finishing just seven seconds behind at 1:58:15.
Holtan edged Neubauer in both the paddle, by 43 seconds; and the bike, by 52 seconds; but faded a bit in the run, finishing at 28:04 compared to 26:21 for the winner.
Beth Wagner, 38, of Pelican Lake was the top female winner with a time of 2:19:42, good enough for 20th overall as well. Tracey Ellemberg was second for the women at 2:29:37, 43rd overall.
Area competitors also included Josh Zalewski, 2:13:15, 12th overall; Corey Slominski, 2:23:00, 27th; Curt Parsons, 2:25:03; 29th; Eric Roller, 2:32:15, 47th overall.
Other area competitors were Brian Sharon, 2:33:21; Susan Slominski, 3:13:29; Jordan Sharon, 3:13:43; Paul Knapp, 3:29:06; and Lacey Stensberg, 3:55:19.
