Wolfman Event Saturday on River, Athletes Converge on Wolf

Saturday will mark the 21st year of the Wolfman Triathlon, a very unique offroad event showcases the rugged and beautiful terrain of the eastern part of Langlade County in and around the upper Wolf River.
A capacity field of 350 are expected to compete in the morning of kayaking, single-track cycling along the Wolf River.
Competitors begin at 8 a.m. with 30 second interval starts on a very rocky 3-mile class II whitewater section of the Wolf River north of Langlade. This downriver canoe and kayak leg ends at the DNR landing in Langlade near the junction of Highways 55 and 64.
Competitors then pull their boats ashore and sprint to the bike racks to transition to the 14-mile mountain biking portion of the race. After a short ride east on Highway 64 the course enters the Nicolet National Forest and the area’s extensive network of challenging technical single-track mountain bike trails. The course eventually exits the National Forest and crosses Highway 55 south of Langlade near the Bear Paw Adventure Resort and continues on more purpose-built trail culminating with a river crossing—which organizers said is a great place to cheer on your favorite “wolfie”—near the end of the mountain biking course.
The last leg of the race is a 3 3/4 mile rugged trail run along the scenic Wolf River.
After all this hard work, racers and volunteers are rewarded with a pig roast, prize give-aways and an awards ceremony. And this year to help celebrate the Wolfman’s 21st year, the post race entertainment will be the Alex Wilson band out of Milwaukee.
More than 400 athletes coming from Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Oregon, Wyoming, Iowa and Wisconsin, with more participants coming from the Antigo, Elton, and White Lake area every year, are expected to compete in this year’s event. They will all be vying for the top honor of Wolfman or Wolf-woman.
The Wolfman, while fitting the bill as a unique event, also has ties with and donates to various local community organizations, as more than 60 people volunteer. Those organizations include:

The volunteer base even gets a little competitive, as many return each year requesting a favorite post that they have laid claim to during past races. Also, the Wolfman would not be possible if it weren’t for the access given by many private landowners in the area.
This Wolfman began as a day event to highlight and showcase the beauty of the Wolf River area. Because of its popularity, it bolsters the local economy with a cash flow easily exceeding $100,000 for the weekend.
This year, Langlade County is partnering with Discover Media Works on an episode promoting the Wolf River area and a film crew will be out filming throughout the event. The episode airing date has yet to be determined.
