Wolfman Draws Athletes To Area

The Wolfman Triathlon, a celebration of athletics, camaraderie and the spectacular scenery of eastern Langlade County, brought over 400 athletes, their support crews and droves of spectators to the Wolf River on Saturday.
The 21st annual event also plumped the coffers of a host of local nonprofit organizations that provide the volunteer corps, opened with competitors kayaking down a rocky 3-mile class II whitewater section of the Wolf River north of Langlade; followed by a 14-mile mountain bike race along technical single-track trails; and concludes with a 3 3/4 mile rugged trail run along the scenic Wolf River.
The top honors of Wolfman and Wolf-woman went to Ryan Baumann, Peoria, Ill., with a blazing final time of 1:50:20; and Anett Trebitz of Duluth, 2:24:37.
Top tandem teams were Evan and Glenn Marvin, Marquette, Mich., 3:57;01, men’s division; Andy and Carolyn Warren, Ironwood, Mich., 4:29:08, co-ed; and Kierstin Andresen and Sally Lundholm, Saint Paul, Minn., 5:36:41, female division.
The local area was well-represented by 19 competitors. They included:

The various local community organizations, which together provide more than 60 volunteers, Boys & Girls Club of Antigo; Wisconsin Bike Patrol; White Lake Historical Society; Gardner Dam Scout Camp - Bay Lakes Council, BSA; Antigo Swim Club; Antigo High School Boys Swim Team; Langlade Area Mountain Biking Association (LAMBA); Antigo Bike and Ski Club; Elcho Cross-Country Ski Club; Antigo Boy Scout Troop 644; and Troutland Rescue
This Wolfman began as a day event to highlight and showcase the beauty of the Wolf River area. Because of its popularity, it bolsters the local economy with a cash flow easily exceeding $100,000 for the weekend.
This year, Langlade County partnered with Discover Media Works on an episode promoting the Wolf River area and a film crew was recording throughout the event. The episode airing date has yet to be determined.
