'Wolfies,' Volunteers to Help Make 22nd Wolfman A Success

Hundreds of wolfies, support teams and volunteers converged on the Wolf River Saturday for the 22nd Wolfman Triathlon, a unique off road triathlon highlighting the rugged terrain of the eastern part of Langlade County in and around the upper Wolf River.
The event was a celebration of health and fitness, with competitors kayaking or canoeing, cycling and running their way through a rugged terrain greased on spots by rainshowers that came and went throughout the day.
It also served as a remembrance ceremony for longtime volunteer organizer Michelle Koss, who was killed in a bicycling accident in spring. At the awards ceremony, Karen McCabe presented a $2,000 donation in Koss’ memory to Michelle’s Lodge, a project to build a four-season chalet at the Moccasin trail system near Elcho. T-shirts emblazoned MK were also sold, with proceeds to the lodge project.
We love her and miss her, McCabe said.
Top Wolfman honors went to John Holtan, 42, and Tracey Ellenberg, 54, who outraced far younger competitors across the three triathlon legs
Holton completed paddling the rocky 3-mile class II whitewater section of the Wolf River north of Langlade, in 26:50. He biked the 14-mile, largely single track trail through the Nicolet National Forest, including a river crossing, in 1:00.04, and finished the course with the 3 3/4 mile trail run in 27:34. Final time was 1:54:29.
Ellenberg paddled in 29:10; biked in 1:17:38 and ran in 34.54 for a elapsed total of 2:21:43.
Top tandem team was Glenn and Evan Marvin of Marquette, Mich., with a total time of 4:06:05.
Top tandem coed honors were won by Josh and Kezia Zalewski of Antigo, with an elapsed time of 5:03:56.

The Wolfman collaborates with many local organizations, with more than 120 volunteers from the Antigo Boy Scouts, Elcho Cross-Country Ski Club, Antigo Swim Club, Antigo Bike & Ski Club, White Lake Historical Society, Troutland Rescue, Antigo High School girls varsity swim team, Boys & Girls Club of Langlade County, Elcho High School, Langlade Area Mountain Bike Association (LAMBA), Lakeland Area Mountain Bike Organization (LAMBO), and the Wisconsin Bike Patrol.
