Visitors Enjoy Gartzke, Add to Reputation of ‘County of Trails’

October 7, 2018

The reputation of the “County of Trails” is moving into the central parts of the state.

This week, 33 participants in the Marshfield YMCA Seniors on the Move program spent the day hiking the Gartzke Trail, a trip hosted by Antigo Bike and Ski Club volunteers Don and JoAnn Belanger, Katherine Gorichan and Nick Salm.

Marshfield YMCA Seniors on the Move enjoy the shelter along the Gartzke Trail.

The seniors dodged a week of rainy weather by coming out on Tuesday, one of the week’s rare respites, and was part of a two-day tour of the area by the hikers.

The Belangers led the more energetic hikers through the hills of Gartzke while Salm and Gorichan led the casual hikers along the flowage marsh trail and back to the lodge in time for lunch, including hot chocolate and maple cookies provided by the Antigo Bike and Ski Club.

Seniors on the Move is a Marshfield YMCA program that provides opportunities for seniors to be active, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and kayaking to places of interest around Wisconsin. They selected Gartzke Trails because members Margaret and Barry Brubaker have hiked the trails and visited the lodge.

Antigo Bike and Ski Club members maintain the trails and were contacted by Brubakers to make arrangements for the hiking tour on a perfect autumn day for hiking.

A second bus of seniors from Marshfield will be back this coming Tuesday to hike the trails. More Antigo Bike and Ski Club members are welcome to help guide the tours and join the fun next Tuesday morning.

The Marshfield seniors were invited back to Gartzke for the year-end waffle breakfast scheduled Saturday morning, Dec. 29. The event is sponsored by Antigo Bike and Ski Club and open to everyone wanting to experience the trails.

Gartzke Trails located eight miles east of Antigo on Fifth Avenue. Hikers, cross-country skiers, and snowshoe enthusiasts can get more information about Gartzke silent sport opportunities by visiting the Antigo Bike and Ski Club Facebook page. New members are always welcome.
