Use of Motorized Recreational Vehicles in Wolf River Area Eyed

Potential changes in the state management plan for the Wolf River area at Langlade, focused on a slight increase in access for motorized recreational vehicles, are under review by the Natural Resources Board, with a decision expected later this spring.
The public has the opportunity to review and comment on proposed amendments that would provide access for motorized recreational vehicles at three properties, including the Upper Wolf River Fisheries Area.
In September 2017, the Natural Resources Board approved a recommendation from the Department of Natural Resources to evaluate several amendment requests the agency has received to provide all-terrain vehicle and utility terrain vehicle access across the Upper Wolf River Fishery Area and the Turtle-Flambeau Scenic Waters Area. These trails would create linkages in the larger regional trail networks.
Specifically, ATV and UTV riders are seeking access near the Highway 64 bridge crossing “in order to fill a gap in the larger trail networks east and west of the area,” according to the proposed amendment.
The department has also received requests to construct a multi-use parking area at the Willow Flowage Scenic Waters Area to serve snowmobilers, ATV/UTVs, and boaters.
None of the proposed facilities are currently authorized by the respective master plans for these properties. In order for the trails and parking area to be constructed, the master plans would need to be amended to allow these uses.
The department is not undertaking a review of the entire range of management actions at these properties, but rather is focusing on potentially authorizing these changes to the existing master plans.
The DNR is encouraging interested people to share initial thoughts and perspectives about these properties and the potential amendments. People can fill out online questionnaires to submit comments, or can download the form and mail it in. Comments, either online or by hard copy, are due by Feb. 4.
The seven questions include:
—Have you visited the area and if so, how many days in the past 12 months
—favorite activities in the area.
—what changes, if any, would you like to see in recreational opportunities provided.
—level of support for developing a linking ATV/UTV trail or route across the Upper Wolf River Fishery Area to create linkages in the larger regional trail networks.
—issues and concerns the DNR should address in the development of the potential amendment.
—and zip code of primary residence.
