‘Triple Crown’ Weekend Starts on Aug. 11, Busy Schedule Includes ‘Dr. T’

Dr. Thecla Helmbrecht Howard, whose family was among the founding members of the Wisconsin Horse Racing Association, will return to her hometown as keynote speaker and guest clinician for the inaugural Northwoods Triple Crown.

The event, presented by Brickners of Antigo & RV Center, will be centered at the Langlade County Fairgrounds Aug. 11 through 13.

Born and raised in Langlade County, Howard has a lifelong passion for horses. She has acquired doctorates in educational leadership and psychology and applies her skills to the equine domain.

Howard is a cofounder of Sheltered Risks Incorporated: Kamp KESSA, an equine and nature human development program. She is an active member of PATH (NARHA & EFMHA), CHA, and 4-H as well as a founding member of the Certification Board for Equine Interaction Professionals.

Dr. T, as known by her peers and clients, was chosen as Wise Woman of the year by HER magazine, for her contribution to youth and women in transition at Kamp KESSA in Frankfort, Ky. She and her husband have been instrumental in the local sustainable economy movement in Kentucky, including going back to using horses for some of their farming initiatives.


In addition to their horse racing interests, the Helmbrecht family was very involved with Triple R Club in Antigo through the 50s and 60s. Members remained involved in a variety of equine pursuits at the track as well as training and breeding.

Howard will be a special guest at the Triple Crown’s kick-off barbecue, slated Friday, Aug. 11 at in the multi-purpose building at the fairgrounds hosted by the Triple R. She will speak on “The Track from Antigo to Kentucky” and is also bringing along home movies from the 1950s and 60s. They feature Triple R trail rides and even some trick riding by a young D. Wayne Lukas, now a Hall of Fame and Kentucky Derby-winning trainer.

The barbecue will also featured a range of honorary guests, including Wisconsin Horse Racing Association alumni and past Triple R queens.

The menu will include barbecued chicken, Polish sausage and sauerkraut, baby reds, corn, cole slaw, dessert, coffee and milk.

Tickets, only available through this Friday, are $15 each or $55 for a family of four and are available at Lakeside Market.

Howard’s two-hour clinic, The Power of Softness: Lessons from the Consciousness of the Prey,” will run from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 12. It will be followed by questions and answers and a book-signing. Fee is $39 per person. Register at NorthwoodsTripleCrown.com or call 715 610-1065.

The three-day Triple Crown will include many other highlights as well. They include:
—The Northwoods Grill Masters Challenge barbecue competition, hosted by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, Saturday, Aug. 12, at 3 p.m.
—Professional bull riding and barrel race in front of the grandstand, Saturday, Aug. 12, at 7 p.m.
—a barn dance with music by the Polar Project on Saturday, Aug. 12 starting at 8:30 p.m.
—and the Menominee Casino resort slot races, another barrel racing event, Sunday, Aug. 13 at noon in the horse arena.

There will also be equine demonstrations, clinics, vendors, mounted shooting and reining demonstrations, and much more.

Weekend tickets, including Bulls-N-Barrels and all demonstrations, are $17. Tickets for the bull riding only are $10.
