Just a few hours before the formal arrival of spring late this afternoon, golfers were out on the Riverview links west of Antigo.

Joe Kretz, who operates the course, explained the March 20 opening is about five weeks earlier than a year ago, four weeks ahead of two years ago and a little behind four years back.

“That was on St. Patrick’s Day,” he said.

Kretz explained the starting date on the Riverview course has the ability to move up and down over the years, depending on temperatures on runoff water conditions.

But today, when the carts started rolling and the golfers swinging, the course was in good shape.

“There is still some winter out there,” Kretz said, pointing to a number of areas of ground frost and snow banks, but everything else is ready to move ahead.

This year golfers will be allowed to use carts, rare for the opener. And every one of the nine holes are open and operating, also unusual for the opener.

Of course, one of the factors that dictate use of the course is the weather, and Kretz noted that this will be a cool weekend.

But with the earlier start, those with memberships are getting a value-added bonus for their investment and those just looking for a little early spring adventure, Riverview is ready.
