Seventeen skiers, supported by a squadron of volunteers and supporters, conquered the first Jack Lake Ski Fest Saturday at the Jack Lake Ski Trails.

The race was the brainchild of Jeremy and Lacey Stensberg of Elcho, who are envisioning an annual fund-raising event with
proceeds to benefit silent sports such as cross-country skiing in area schools.

“This is how the Wolfman got started,” Chris Berry, on hand to cheer on her husband, Scott, said. “A few people gathering at the river and look what that has grown into.”

The Wolfman Triathlon now draws in excess of 300 competitors along with hundreds of volunteers and supporters every September to eastern Langlade County.

Many of Saturday’s competitors were familiar names from past Wolfmans and other ski races, including the American Birkebeinner coming in two weeks near Hayward.

The course was just short of 20 kilometers, about 12 1/2 miles, roughly following the outer perimeter of the Jack Lake Trail.

Top finisher overall was Tom Koss of Antigo, who completed the course in 1:03:25. Top female finisher was Karen McCabe of St. Germain, 1:20:52. They were both skate skiers.

In the classic division, top male finisher was Jeff Loss, Milwaukee, with a time of 1:09:50. Top female classic skier was Mary Stensberg,
Antigo, 1:51:03.
