Ribbon Cut for New Outdoor Facility

With a snip of a red ribbon, Colin Koss formally dedicated a new ski lodge at the Moccasin Trail in honor of his late mother Michelle, Saturday.

Temperatures wer chilly but the skies were sunny for the event, held at the trailhead of te skiing and snowshoe comples operated byt he Elcho Cross-Country Ski Club. Over 100 people, including volunteers ski and snowshoe enthusiasts and representative sfromt eh Wolfman Triathlon, Antigo Bike and Ski Club, and Antigo Optimist Club attended.
There was plenty of chili and hand along with an overabundance of bars and desserts. Youngsters played in teh snowbanks that lined the crowded parking lot and toasted hot dogs and marshmellos over the bonfire.
And people of all ages, many accompanied by their dogs, braved the weather, straped on skis or snowshoes and enjoyed the trail.
Construction after a fast paced fund-raising campaign, Michelle's Lodge was dedicated in memory of Koss, who was killed in a traffic mishap in March 2016, while bicycling near her Bryant-area home.
The lodge is located in the Langlade County Forest with the trail system maintained for four-season use by skiers, hikers, snowshoers, horseback riders and other.
Similar indesign to the Spychalla Lodge at Jack Lake, the building ws constructed in part by students from Elchol High School technology education classes, with funding through a cross-section of the community, including local fuoundations, businesses, civic clubs and dozens and dozens of those known simply as "Friends of Michelle."
Koss gruaduated from Elcho High School in 1980 and went to become a nurse and helath educator. A passionate competitor, she was involved in the Birkebeiner cross-country ski race, The Wolfman Triathlon along the Wolf River at Langlade, created the Splash-N-Dash aquathon at Veterans Memorial Park and the women's Monday night summer bike rides among a myriad of other activities.
Plans call for thelodge to be the centerpiece of an indoor/outdoor classroom for use by the students, especially since it si only a short drive fromt he Elcho School. Portions of that idea have already been put into place, with the formation of the Elcho Silent Sports Club for students of all ages.
Along with the educational component for students, the facility will promote physical fitness and outdoor opportunities for all ages and abilities.
