Volunteers have put the finishing touches on Antigo’s challenging new single track mountain bike trail and are already making plans for more loops.

A crew led by Brady Koss and Josh Zalewski along with other members of the Antigo Bike and Ski Club spent Saturday morning at the trailhead, located at the now-closed city landfill off Dump Road in the town of Rolling.

“This is a really neat project,” Sarah Repp, the city’s director of parks and recreation, said. “The group is really enthusiastic and involved.”

“It’s a nice collaboration,” Koss said. “It’s an opportunity to have another outlet for people in the area to get outside, enjoy some healthy activities and enjoy what Antigo has to offer.”

The one-mile look covered winding and varied terrain, with a number of technical components that single-track enthusiasts enjoy.

“It’s challenging,” Koss said. “It gives you a real adrenaline rush.”

“It’s a rough trail,” Repp said. “That’s what it is suppose to be, with lots of technical components, hills and twists and turns.”

Koss said that while the trail is designed for experienced single-track cyclists, planning is also underway to add loops for all levels of riders.

“We want to continue to add to the system,” he said. “We do have plans to put in a beginner’s loop.”

And it will be a four-season destination, open to snowshoers in the winter months.

Repp plans to connect the trail to the citywide bike route currently being mapped and signed, giving cyclists the opportunity to travel right from town to the trail.

“There is so much opportunity out there,” Repp added. “There is a lot of potential.”
