Music in the Park Opens Monday, Promises Great Season of Concerts

Langlade County’s acclaimed Music in the Park, a free summer concert series, opens Monday.
Held at the City Park bandstand, this year’s traditional opener will be the Antigo High School Jazz Band. Music starts at 6:30 p.m. with hot dogs, pies and custard served by music faculty at 5:30 p.m.
The series started years ago after volunteers set up an occasional concert at the City Park’s venerable bandstand.
But after a humble start, they have exploded in interest and popularity, allowing the bandstand, while retaining its original charm, to be expanded and the seating area improved to include a dance floor, bench seating and hard-surface walkways for senior citizens.
Music is now held on Mondays and Thursday nights, with various groups serving pie, Culver’s frozen custard, and often much more as fund-raisers for both the concert series and the various organizations.
The popularity has also spurred concerts at the Elcho Community Pavilion, which next week will feature the MLC Blues Band; and White Lake, which on June 19 will open with the Northerners big band at the White Lake Historical Society depot.
The summer series continues through Aug. 30 and brochures with complete schedules can be found at the Antigo Daily Journal and other locations across the area. A few highlights include:
—the Elks Flag day ceremony on Thursday June 14 at the bandstand.
—the popular Hip Pocket show band on Monday, July 2 at the bandstand.
—MPK Celtic Christian Band, with Scottish fiddle tunes, on Wednesday, July 4 in Elcho. The band will also be in Antigo on Aug. 2.
—Monroe Crossing at the bandstand on Thursday, July 5.
—My Sweet Patootie acoustic vaudeville and nostalgic roots at the bandstand on Aug. 9.
—and Antigo Amateur Talent Night on Thursday, Aug., 23 at the bandstand.
Rain location for the Antigo concerts is the Heinzen Pavilion at Peaceful Valley Park. White Lake’s rain location is the Lake Pavilion. Elcho’s venue allows music rain-or-shine.
The Antigo Music in the Park Planning Committee includes Sharon Gibson, Carol Philipps, Nick Salm, Sarah Repp, Lil Tower, Barb Lehrer, Dede Cromer, Karen Trembath and Barb Godell.
Elcho concerts are coordinated by Warren Wagner. Judy Peterson handles similar duties at White Lake.
Music in the Park is funded by donations, fund-raisers, sponsorships and freewill offerings.
