Local Honors Presented for Ice Age Trail Activities

Six area residents were recognized recently at the annual Ice Age Trail Alliance (IATA) conference held near Baraboo.
Dean and Polly Blazek, Pickerel were recognized for 40 years of service to the Ice Age National Scenic Trail while Lee Auner, Deerbrook, was recognized for 30 years of service and Lon Malzahn, Antigo, for 10 years of trail work.
The Blazeks were also honored as the Langlade Ice Age Trail Chapter's “In the Mud” Award recipients. The special award is given to volunteer/members who display dedication to the mission and goals of the alliance and a willingness to roll up their sleeves on behalf of the Ice Age Trail.
Joe Jopek, dean of the Ice Age Trail in Langlade County, with Polly and Dean Blazek, who were recognized for 40 years of service to the Ice Age National Scenic Trail and also honored with the “In the Mud” Award.
Lee Auner, Sam Picone, Summit Lake and Gerald Anderson, Rhinelander received recognition at the conference by the National Park Service's Volunteers-in-Parks program for their service to the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.
The Langlade Ice Age Trail Chapter is one of 21 local volunteer groups affiliated with the alliance based at Cross Plains. Information on getting involved with the trail locally is available from the Langlade chapter coordinator at 715-623-2645 or email jjjopekj@frontier.com.
