Kettlebowl Fun Day Is Sunday, Everyone Welcome At The Local Hill

Kettlebowl Fun Day, a wintertime tradition dating back decades, returns on Sunday.
The hill, located northeast of Antigo, will be open from noon to 4 p.m. for an afternoon full with activities.
Volunteers are planning a hunt on the hill for plastic eggs filled with prizes. There will also be prize drawings, including chances to win a snowboard or one of several ski helmets, and the ever-popular youth costume contest.
Fun Day dates back at least 50 years at the hill, with the Feb. 23, 1966 Antigo Daily Journal reporting on plans for a day of straight-away downhill racing for boys and girls along with a separate category for costumed skiers.
After the event, the newspaper listed the race winners, who included Pete Aulik with three first place finishes in the 15 and over group, with Marlene Rhine tops among the girls. Runners-up were Todd Toburen, Rodney Madeson and Connie Vandehey.
Other race winners in the younger categories included John Tesch and Debby March, ages 10 and under, with Bob Diercks and Kathy March, second; and Mike Diercks and Pat Aulik, ages 10 to 15, with runners-up Tim Klapper and Cheri Dionne.
The 50-year-ago event also brought out plenty of costumes, including Kathi Meidam as an organ grinder with Donna Auner as her monkey, Carol Aulik as the fat lady and Glen Polzin as Batman.
Now in its sixth decade, generations of skiers have learned the basics of the sport on Kettlebowl’s gentle slopes. It offers five rope tows with intermediate runs and a bunny/beginners hill. Snowboards are welcome. There is a modern chalet with concessions.
Kettlebowl is located 15 miles northeast of Antigo on Highway 52 or four miles southwest of the Hwy. 52/55 intersection at Lily.
The hill is solely run by volunteers which keeps the cost having outdoor fun affordable. Adults can get lift passes for $6; teenagers, $3; children ages six to 12, $2; five and under get to ski for free.
There are also 4.3 miles of cross-country trails groomed for classic skiing.
