'Junket' Crowd Explores the Area Surrounding Moccasin Trail System

An excellent crowd explored the Moccasin trails in summer time and got a firsthand look at the location of the proposed Michelle’s Lodge at the Elcho Cross-Country Ski Club’s first summer junket Sunday.
The event was held at the Moccasin recreation complex located west of Elcho off Moccasin Lake Road.
According to organizers, the event was designed as a way to showcase year-round usage of the trail complex, which is known for its cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during the winter months.
There were mountain bike outings on both the cross-country and snowshoe loops along with hiking and dog-walking throughout the afternoon. And while no horses were present, a contingent of equestrians did use the trails a day prior to the event.
The outing also served as the unofficial unveiling of the location for Michelle’s Lodge, a four-season chalet the ski club hopes to have constructed by Elcho High School students over the winter months, with completion next summer.
Ski Club President Dr. Chuck Wetzel briefly outlined the project, noting that the drive has been going well but dollars continue to be needed for construction, maintenance and upgrades trail equipment to ensure year-round use of the facility.
The lodge is being named in honor of Michelle Koss, a 1980 Elcho High School alumnus and longtime advocate for health, fitness and fun. She was killed in a bicycle accident in March.
Members of the Koss family were all on hand to enjoy the trails with their friends. Plans for the chalet, which will be similar to the Spychalla Lodge dedicated in February at Jack Lake, were also available for viewing.
There was also a cookout with hot dogs, s’mores and plenty of desserts, including brownies and bars.
