July 19 Storm Impact on Langlade County Recreation

The July 19, 2019 storm has had a lasting impact on Langlade County's landscape and recreation. WXPR Radio reports,"The National Weather Service reports the worst damage was associated with a 'macroburst,' a large downburst of straight-line winds that affected a large swath from Pelican Lake in Oneida County, southeast through Langlade and Oconto counties. Thousands of trees were snapped or uprooted, resulting in damage to hundreds of homes and cottages. The damage path was about 60 miles long and up to 10 miles wide at times. Winds were at least 100 mph in the hardest hit areas near Lily in northeast Langlade County."

Wisconsin State Senator Tom Tiffany during the WXPR interview has stated, "The estimates I'm hearing is there's enough wood down in this region as a result of the storm blow down to provide our mills with wood for two years. It is a tremendous amount of wood."
Langlade County Forestry Department with help from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, area clubs, and other agencies have been assessing and clearing trails on the 30,000 acres of Langlade County public land affected by this storm. With this extent of damage it will take some time to clear trails to make them safe for users. As of August 14, 2019, the entire Langlade County ATV/UTV Trail System remains closed until further notice. With the extent of the storm, other trail systems have been affected, but the majority of the mountain bike, hiking, and horseback riding have been cleared for users.
Greyling Brandt, Recreation Program Manager for the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District, Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest would like to remind everyone, “There is still quite a list of closed recreation areas, trails and roads on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Folks are reminded to adhere to these closures for their safety,” said Brandt. “In many places there are limbs caught up in the canopy or leaning trees that pose a significant safety risk.”
