Jack Lake Ski Fest is designed to introduce new generation to the sport.

An inaugural ski race at the premier Jack Lake trails is designed to introduce a new generation to the joys of silent sports.

The Jack Lake Ski Fest, a 20 kilometer race for both classic and skate skiers, will take place n Saturday, Feb. 11 at the trails located just off Highway J north of Antigo.

The course, about 12 miles in length, will include intermediate to advanced trail sections, basically following the outer perimeter of the trail system.

The race is being organized by Jeremy and Lacey Stensberg of Elcho, with a goal of raising funds to promote silent sports programs such as cross-country skiing in local schools.

For its initial year, the ski fest is partnering with Elcho school district and Central Cross Country Ski Association to provide skis and a curriculum to implement during and after school.

The 30 pairs of skis are designed for youngsters up to grade five, with simple bindings that clip directly to snow boots, perfect for getting children out onto the trails and maybe even encouraging parents and other brothers and sisters to try out the sport as well.

Stensberg noted that silent sports such as skiing and cycling can be enjoyed for a lifetime and this area is infused with trail systems
and opportunities not often found.

Jack Lake was chosen for the event, he added, because of the length and quality of the system, maintained by caretaker Tom Lazers with
equipment that includes a PistenBully groomer.

“This should be a great event to showcase one of the best trails northern Wisconsin has to offer,” Stensberg said.

Events such as a ski race generally take a few years to gain popularity, but initial response has been good, he said.

“People are starting to trickle in,” he said. It’s the first year so we’ll probably get a lot of on-site registration. If people have a good time, they’ll invited friends next year.”

Advance registration is $45 online at the Tortoise and Hare website. Registration, at $50 per person, will also be allowed on-site on Friday,
Feb. 10, 5 to 7 p.m. and Feb. 11, 7 to 9 a.m. at the Spychalla Lodge located at the Jack Lake trailhead.

Food, fire and fun are promised after the race. For more information and a course map, go to Facebook and search for “Jack Lake Ski
