Hiking Season Has Arrived In The 'County of Trails,' Event On Saturday

Hiking season has arrived in the County of Trails.
The first hike on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in Langlade County of the 2016 season is slated Saturday over the Old Railroad segment northeast of Antigo.
Organized by the Langlade County Ice Age Trail Chapter, the event is open to all hikers. Interested persons and groups should meet at 9 a. m. in front of the Langlade County Forestry Office on the fairgrounds, where transportation will be provided to the trailhead.
Participants are encouraged to wear suitable clothing and bring a lunch. The hike will be a five mile trek on the west end of the Old Railroad segment including the portion of the old grade upon which trains ran between the main line at Koepenick to the Pearson area during the early years of the last century.
The segment is one of four Ice Age Trail stretches in Langlade County designated in 1977 by the U. S. Department of the Interior as part of the National Trails System. The grade stretch is proposed as a ATV trail next year so the two hikes scheduled there this year could be the final chapter outings on a historical portion of the trail.
Outing participants are eligible for receiving the chapter's 40th Anniversary Hiker patch during the group's observance of four decades of trail activity in the county. To earn the patch, persons must make two of the three outings scheduled by the chapter this year. The other chapter hikes in 2016 will be Sept. 10 and Oct. 1.
