Despite the theft of building materials, Antigo Bike and Ski Club volunteers Don Belanger and Mike Winski are constructing a new deck at the Gartzke Flowage lodge in time for fall and winter outings.
Winski said about $100 worth of building materials purchased by the Bike and Ski Club were stolen from the site before volunteers could build the deck. He added that most of the families enjoying the trails and lodge are respectful of materials and equipment, but it is discouraging when thefts occur.
Belanger added that occasionally signs are taken and need to be replaced at added cost to the club.
Positive efforts of the volunteers while building the deck were reinforced when a young family new to the Antigo area walked the trails and looked for birds. They said Gartzke trails located about 10 miles east of Antigo are their favorite.
When volunteers are tempted to question whether their efforts are worthwhile, smiles and compliments from families out enjoying the trails provide the answer, Winski said.
Antigo Bike and Ski Club coordinates Gartzke projects with Langlade County Forestry Department who owns the property. Club volunteers are considered a "Friend of Gartzke" and maintain the trails, do improvements and purchase equipment needed to maintain the park. Volunteer time is rewarded not only from Gartzke users, it also qualifies the club for some state assistance to purchase supplies and equipment.
Antigo Bike and Ski Club members invite everyone interested in outdoor activities to join them Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Vickie and the Vets on Elm Street for pizza, salad, beverages and a meeting to plan fall and winter activities. A fall work day at Gartzke will also be scheduled.
Families of all ages are encouraged to attend the meeting, especially young families looking for more outdoor activities.
