Festivities Sunday To Celebrate New Barn Facility At Langlade County Fairgrounds

Langlade County’s new livestock pavilion, a sparkling homage to modern agriculture, will host a grand opening celebration on Sunday.
The structure, which replaced the venerable but failing fairgrounds barn that dated to the 1920s, was constructed with some county insurance funds plus a substantial dose of community donations.
With a price tag nudging toward $400,000, the sparkling three-wing facility features the latest in animal husbandry technology, and it will all be on display on Sunday.
“We are envisioning this as a mini-Farm Technology Days as well as our salute to June Dairy Month,” Ann Boshan, one of the event organizers, said.
It’s also a way to say thank you to all who contributed, with no admission charge. Proceeds from the various food and raffle opportunities will go toward paying off the final bills, adding some finishing touches such as decorative murals and supporting 4-H programs.
Events will open at 1 p.m. and continue well into the evening hours.
There will be music by Judy Knudsen from 1 to 2 p.m.; Stone Soup Brothers from 2 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 5 p.m.; Gary’s Basement Band from 5 to 7 p.m.; and the Northernaire’s from 7 to 9 p.m.
In the adjoining blue exhibition building, Northwoods Karaoke and DJ will be offering tunes from 1 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. with Slidin’ on Ice from 6 to 9 p.m.
The 3 o’clock break in the entertainment will be for the program, which will include the announcement of the structure’s official name plus some important acknowledgments.

Three area implement dealerships—Swiderski Implement, Reisterer & Schnell and Quinlan’s Equipment—are having a dunk tank contest. Representatives from each dealer will be on the hot seat raising money for the barn project and 4-H. The dealership that raises the least will contribute an additional $50.
There will also be a bale throwing contest, and milk chugging sponsored by Pete’s Distributing.
The Antigo Lions Club will be serving beer and soda while Mary Schmoll will be cooking up burgers and brats. Nick Salm will be flipping chocolate waffles and the Optimist Cheese Curd Wagon will be churning out those fan favorites.
One entire wing will be devoted to area agricultural businesses touting their services and products, similar to the annual Farm Technology Days.
There’s more as well, including a raffle for cash prizes of $2,000, $1,000, $500 and four $100 awards plus a secondary opportunity to win a romantic weekend for two at Wave Pointe Marina and Resort in Sturgeon Bay. Tickets are $10 each or three for $25 with the drawing at 9 p.m.
The barn was placed into service for the 2012 youth fair, just months after the original pavilion was razed. But since then, crews have remained at work completing the wiring, bathrooms and a myriad of other improvements.
“On Sunday, people will see a nearly completed building,” Boshan said, explaining that weather has fouled some landscaping and other exterior touches. “We’re introducing a beautiful pavilion that can be used for just about anything.”
