Farmers Market Opens Saturday in New Building at Peaceful Valley Park

Heinzen Pavilion will host the first farm market of 2017.Heinzen Pavilion will host the first farm market of 2017.e season will be available when the Antigo Farmers Market kicks off its ninth season Saturday in a new location, the Heinzen Pavilion in Peaceful Valley Park.
The market will open at 8 a.m., with the pavilion available in case of inclement weather. It is located one block east of Superior Street, just off the Field Street-Sixth Avenue intersection.
The market board is looking forward to celebrating the new beginning, Renate Bromberg, the market .., said. The pavilion offers shelter in rainy weather as well as ample electricity which might encourage a larger diversity of vendors. The pleasant surroundings of the park will invite people to linger a little longer and sample some of the food, prepared on site. The nearby playground is another welcome bonus.
Bromberg explained that successful markets were held at the previous location, the Antigo Country Store parking lot since 2008, it had outgrown the space for vendors as well as parking spaces for customers.
The market board of directors together with the City Parks and Recreation Department spent the winter months preparing for the move. Funded through grants from the Remington and Sheldon Foundations, banners and posters were designed to be placed in several strategic locations to direct traffic to the new site.
Last season’s market manager, Hayley Zaverousky will return this year.
She will be instrumental to make the transition as smoothly as possible and help answering any questions market patron might have, Bromberg said. The new location will require some adjustments for everyone, but we are confident that it will offer many advantages for both vendors and patrons.
The June markets will offer some early vegetables such as asparagus, baby greens, fresh herbs, green onions, lettuce mixes, rhubarb, radishes and spinach. There will also be vegetable and flower bedding plants and flower baskets.
Other items include fresh eggs, honey, maple syrup, textile craft items, soaps and lotions and prepared food such as jams and jellies, pickles and kimchee.
All products are locally grown, gathered and crafted by the vendors, Bromberg said. It offers a great opportunity for market visitors to chat with the experts.''
