Elcho Students Work on Trail Project

Elcho school students are mixing work and pleasure at the Moccasin Trail.
On Friday, sixth through eighth grade students traveled to the trail, located just west of Elcho off Moccasin Lake Road, for a morning of maintenance work mixed with some hiking and other activities.
The students visited the trail as a labor of love through the district’s positive behavior program. Using supplies provided by the Elcho Cross-Country Ski Club, they scrapped and painted picnic tables, the lean-to and the pumphouse located at the trailhead.
They took turns walking the trails, which are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in wintertime and hiking and horseback riding in the warmer weather months.
There was also a scavenger hunt and a bonfire perfect for enjoying s’mores.
The ski club and school district are joining forces on a major project to expand the trail into a full four-season facility. Fund-raising currently underway to purchase needed maintenance equipment and construct a four-season chalet that will be known as Michelle’s Lodge, named in memory of Michelle Koss, a 1980 Elcho High School graduate and health and wellness advocate who was killed in a bicycling accident in March.
The chalet will be constructed over the winter months by students in Elcho High School technology education classes and assembled at the trailhead in the spring. It will be available for public use as well as serve as a classroom for students visiting the trail system for field trips.
