Crowd Huge for Bull Riding Event

Langlade County hit a trifecta this weekend at the inaugural Northwoods Triple Crown.
The three day event, a mix of barbecue competitions, barrel racing and professional bull riding, drew an outstanding crowd to the Langlade County Fairgrounds on a very busy August weekend.
It all went very well, organizer Shaughn Novy of Black Hawk Hill Inc. said. We had just outstanding fans. They all want the event to come back again next year.
The Tripe Crown got out of the gate fast, with a Friday night kickoff picnic featuring guest speaker Dr. Thecla Helmbrecht Howard along with a long list of horse racing and Triple R Riding Club alumni, including past queen.
There were people who came to the picnic who hadn’t seen each other in 15 or 20 years, Novy said Some of the queens wore their tiaras and we had a table full of memorabilia.
Saturday opened with the barbecue competition and various equestrian demonstrations throughout the day.
The event entered the homestretch Saturday night with The Bulls-N-Barrels mix of professional bull riding and barrel racing. It was conducted before a full grandstand, on a built-up dirt arena that brought the fans very close to the action.

If 10 is the measurement of the best an event can be, the bull riding scored an 11, Novy said. Most arenas aren’t set up to put the audience that up-close-and-personal with the cowboys and the bulls. It was the best bull-riding we possibly could have had.
The Triple Crown went under the finish line with a flourish on Sunday afternoon, with more barrels, including the Menominee Casino Resort slot race, with competitors buying-in for a chance at cash and prizes.
Barrel racing is a bit less fan-friendly than bull-riding for the casual fan, but Novy said plenty were still on hand for the event.
Novy credited a cadre of volunteers, including representatives of the Antigo Gridiron Club. Triple R Riding Club, Antigo Area Youth Hockey Association and Antigo Optimist Club, with proceeds earmarked to local organizations and nonprofits, including AVAIL, the local advocacy agency for victims of domestic and sexual abuse.
And she said the bull riding arena was made possible through the efforts of volunteers, including local construction and earth-moving experts, who built up the track, which normally has a dramatic inside pitch for automobile racing, to allow a safe surface and excellent viewing.
