Bulls, Barbecue and Barrels to Spark Triple Crown at Fairgrounds

Bulls, barrels, barbecues and a reunion of old friends are all on tap for the second annual Northwoods Triple Crown, now under a week away.
The event will fill the Langlade County Fairgrounds with all manner of equestrian and rodeo excitement, with a dash of motivation, a reunion of longtime riders, bargain-hunting and the spiciest and most succulent of Kansas City-sanctioned barbecued ribs.
The big thing is the bull riding, organizer Shaughn Novy of Black Hawk Hill said. That’s what people come to see. The barrel racing and barbecue competition are close behind.
Tickets for the full weekend at $12 for adults and free for children eight and under, and can be purchased in advance at Fantastic Sam’s, Lakeside Market and Black Hawk Hill, parking will be $5 per car for the weekend, with net proceeds to benefit the Antigo Gridiron club. The Antigo Area Youth Hockey Association will be manning the food stand.
Admission includes weekend demonstrations and seminars, the Pro Bulls & Barrels event Saturday night followed by the barn dance and all shows including mounted shooting and Sunday’s jackpot barrel races.
It’s becoming more of a festival than just bulls, barrels and barbecue, Novy said. We really have something for just about everyone to enjoy. It’s going to be an exciting year.
FRIDAY KICK-OFF
Friday, Aug. 11 will be Student Day at the Northwoods Triple Crown.
Activities kick off with reining and barrel racing demonstrations with Kim Diercks and Ericka Spencer, Katelyn Bradley showcasing Thoroughbreds and their versatility following a racing career, and at 4 p.m. a Purina seminar, Tips for Man’s Best Friend.
Stop out to support FFA and see the new Dodge Ram trucks with Brickners of Antigo. From 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Antigo FFA will receive $20 for each test drive.
Motivation speaker Brandon Lee White will bring a perfect message for Antigo, Learn to Dream Big in a Small Town, tailored to students ages 12 to 18, at 5 p.m.
From goal-setting to reinforcing the sense of community and family, White will focus on helping teens take ownership of who they are, what they want, and move beyond what holds them back.
The picnic will follow at 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose building. Honored guests will be local horse trainers, youth mentors, and alumni from the Wisconsin Riders horse club, now known as the Langlade County Horse and Pony Project.
We want to recognize some of the people who have helped youth in the community, Novy explained.
The keynote speaker during the dinner was made possible by the Andy L. and Leone Sheldon Charitable Trust. All students ages 12 to 18 who attend the workshop will also receive free dinner tickets through a donation from the Knights of Columbus and local businesses, including Volm Companies and CoVantage Credit Union.

SATURDAY
Saturday, August 11 will bring bulls and barbecue to the forefront.
The second Northwoods Grill Masters barbecue competition will fill the morning hours, with teams competing in the ribs and chicken categories for a cash and trophies in an event sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society.
All teams must supply their own ribs and chicken for the competition, but organizers will bring the slabs of ribs for the People’s Choice Award. All items needed to cook must be brought by the team and only charcoal and wood may be used as heat sources.
Meat must be ready for sampling by 1 p.m. and sticks will be offered for sale to the public, a true crowd-pleaser.
Awards will be announced at 2 p.m.
All net proceeds from the People’s Choice voting will be donated to Antigo FFA. Winner will receive a high-end Yeti cooler.
After the grills have cooled, it will be time to heat up the arena for the Pro Bulls and Barrels, professional bull riding at its finest.
The fast and powerful action will take place with professional cowboys, bulls, and clowns in front of the grandstand. They will be competing for cash and prizes as well as providing top-notch rodeo entertainment.
Afterwards, there will be a barn dance with music by The Ledge.
The day will also feature activities in the arena between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., including a cowboy mounted shooting jackpot competition for cash and prizes, barrel racing at 3 p.m. and at 4 p.m. a Purina seminar on Performance Nutrition for the Equine Athlete.
The drill team will take the arena at 6 p.m.
SUNDAY
The third B of the weekend—barrel racing—will be the focus on Sunday with the Menominee Casino Resort barrel racing slot race and Northwoods Youth Challenge starting at 10 a.m.
The best barrel racers in the region will be participating for $10,000 in cash and prizes.
SHOPPING AND MORE
Bargain hunters will find plenty to love all weekend long.
A variety of vendors will be on hand selling their wares throughout the three days.
In addition, a horse and pony consignment tack sale will be taking place throughout the event, with consignors invited to clean out their barns and homes and bring in tack, equipment and decor.
Consignment fee is $2 plus 14 percent of the final sale price. Proceeds will be donated to benefit the Langlade County Humane Society and the Learn to Ride program at Black Hawk Hill.
