Members of the Antigo Rotary Club are putting their equity—both financially and physically—into the new off-road bicycling trail at Jack Lake.

Rotarians joined with members of the Langlade Area Mountain Bike Association at Veterans Memorial Park at Jack Lake recently, presenting a check for $5,000 toward the project and then taking their grub hoes, loppers, picks and shovels out on the trail to remove saplings and roots.

Rotary Club President Brian Prunty presents a $5,000 check to

The Rotary Club is providing half of the funds, with a $2,500 match from Rotary District 0622 through a community development grant.

The Rotary Club has done a number of community projects over the years, most recently focused on two bridges along the city’s Spring Brook walking trail and a nine hole expansion of the city’s disc golf course.

LAMBA will use the donation for trail infrastructure plus tools to maintain the trail system.

Work on the new loop is nearly completed, with LAMBA hosting its first group ride on the system on Tuesday night.

The group has also scheduled another volunteer work day for some mop up work on Saturday, starting at 8 a.m.

The trail project has a multi-year focus, with an overall goal of creating a 25-mile trail system that will draw outdoor enthusiasts from across the Midwest.

Phase one included carving out a largely new single-track trail system on the south and west side of the park.

Subsequent phases through 2018 and 2019 will extend the trail’s length around Game and Jack lakes and connect with the existing ski and hiking trails to the north.
