Antigo Community Garden is Growing, Reserve Plot by May 8

Charles Dudley Warner, in his 1871 book, My Summer in a Garden, wrote What a man needs in gardening is a cast-iron back, with a hinge in it.
Knowing that gardening can be tough on the body, especially for people who have limited mobility, the Antigo Community Garden will have wheelchair-accessible raised beds this growing season.
A grant was recently received through the Methodist Foundation to install two raised garden beds at the garden, located behind the Antigo United Methodist Church. There are also traditional plots available to anyone interested in growing a garden this year.
The deadline for registering for a plot is Sunday, May 8. On May 10 at 5:30 p.m., there will be a meeting for registered gardeners to learn about the procedures, rules and seed distribution.
What the garden offers
The Antigo Community Garden is offering 12 by 20 foot gardening plots that are rototilled and ready for planting to anyone who is open to digging in the dirt and wanting to experience fresh, great-tasting vegetables throughout the summer. Seeds will be available for free (as supplies last) through a donation from Old Seeds through the Antigo Country Store. Tools, supplies and water are also available.
Rules for gardeners
The Community Garden Committee asks that once a garden is planted, the user must continue to maintain it through the harvest of all vegetables and clean-up. Weeds must also be kept under control. The Community Garden will be shared by many people, so it is important that everyone with a plot is respectful- this means keeping the plot maintained and free of tools, garbage and weeds.
Gardeners may also find that they have grown more vegetables than they will use. They are encouraged to donate excess fruit and vegetables to the local food pantry.
A minimal donation of $20 is suggested to help keep the community garden growing year after year.
During the 2015 growing season, the community garden produced over 6,300 pounds of fresh produce for gardeners.
