The weather promises to be delightful for Saturday’s fifth annual Splash-n-Dash Duathlon, the only race of its kind in Northcentral Wisconsin.

The race, a mix of swimming and running, will be held at Veterans Memorial Park at Jack Lake. Starting gun will be at 8:30 a.m., with late registrations accepted between 7 and 7:30 a.m.

We are excited to host this race as it is such a unique race and fund-raiser for Antigo swimming, organizer Mary Stensberg said. It is also a memorial race to Michelle Koss, the founder of Splash-n-Dash. Michelle was such an encourage to all swimmers and to anyone interested in fitness. She encouraged so many to get out there and get moving toward better personal fitness and this race is a perfect place for that to happen.

The race involves swimming either 1/2 or 1/4 mile in the crystal clear waters of Jack Lake, then running a 5 kilometer course around the trails of Veterans Memorial Park. Racers can compete individually or as a tandem team, with one swimming and one running.

Again this year there will be high school tandem teams and a special race for youngsters.

The high school tandem teams will consist of one swimmer and one runner. The teams can choose the long or short course, with the winners receiving a traveling trophy. The youth event is for racers ages 6 to 8 or 9 to 11. Racers, ages 6 to 8, will swim 25 yards and run 1/4 mile. Racers, ages 9 to 11, will swim 50 yards and run 1/2 mile.

Stensberg said about 100 racers are expected. In addition to Saturday morning, walk-in registrations will also be accepted on Friday to 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Clara R. McKenna Aquatic Center.

We welcome all to join us at Jack Lake for the race, Stensberg said. The youth will take off first followed by the full race beginning immediately afterwards.

The awards ceremony will follow immediately after the races.

The event will take place rain or shine.

Antigo swim club and the Antigo High School Boys and Girls Varsity swim teams would like to thank all of our sponsors for this race and all of the racers and volunteers who come out and make this race possible, Stensberg said.

The funds raised from the Splash-n-Dash will be donated to the Antigo swimming programs. Over the past four years the event has raised close to $8,500 for swim programs.

Splash-n-Dash participants complete leg one, the swim in Jack Lake, at the 2016 event.
