‘Blazing Babes’ Upgrade the Signage on Ice Age Trail Here

A dedicated group of Ice Age Trail volunteers, known as the “Blazing Babes” upgraded the signage along with 11.2 mile Old Railroad Segment of the Ice Age Trail National Scenic this month.
The group from the Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter is often invited to travel throughout the state to take on the tedious task of painting the two inch by four inch yellow trail markers every 100 yards or so in guiding hikers along the trail.
A scenic relocation of the Old Railroad Segment was completed last October, between Highway 45, through Veterans Memorial Park, and on to Highway A. Temporary yellow plastic blazes were nailed to trees and posts, but those tend to fade, damage the trees and are less environmentally friendly.
Equipped with yellow paint and small artists brushes, the trail blazers removed all the temporary signage and meticulously painted and second coated each blaze, sharing laughter, camaraderie, and stories while they work for hours.
The crew logged 187 volunteer hours, saving local chapter volunteers much maintenance work. The crisp, welldefined blazes leave no question for hikers following the trail.
The team of eight, mostly retired women, including five who have hiked the entire Ice Age Trail, enjoyed the hospitality of Veterans Memorial Park for their four-day stay. The group included Barb Johnson, Ann Green, Chris Miller. Sherrie Ritz, Judy Rose, Kris Jenson, Jessica Woodward and “Boss Babe” Pat Witkowski.
