27th Annual Wolfman Triathlon

Saturday, September 10, will mark the 27th annual Wolfman Triathlon, one of the first off-road triathlons in the lower 48, which highlights the rugged and beautiful terrain of the eastern part of Langlade County in and around the upper Wolf River. Due to its popularity, it bolsters the local economy and has brought people to the area all summer in hopes of getting a leg up on the competition by running the course a few times before race day.
Racers begin at 8:00 AM with our Dryathlon division that involves a run from our river start through some of the finest potato fields in Langlade County to our boat take out location. These racers will continue the race with the rest of the participants. The triathlon racers start in kayaks/canoes on a very rocky 3-mile class II whitewater section of the Wolf River north of Langlade. This downriver canoe and kayak leg ends at the DNR landing in Langlade near the junction of Highways 55 and 64. Racers then pull their boats ashore and sprint to the bike racks for a 13-mile mountain biking portion of the race. After a short ride east on highway 64, the course enters the Nicolet National Forest and into the area’s extensive network of challenging technical single-track of the Nicolet Roche Mountain bike trails. The course eventually exits the National Forest, crosses highway 55 south of Langlade and into the Gardner Dam Scout Camp. The last leg of the race is a 3-3/4 mile rugged trail run along the scenic Wolf River starts with a unique river crossing. Athletes come from throughout the Midwest as well as several western states all vying for the top spot. After racers compete, there is a traditional locally prepared pig roast, awards presentation, and live music.
The triathlon’s weekend headquarters are located at the Gardner Dam Scout Camp. The weekend reflects a festival atmosphere with onsite camping, a large tent for all the festivities, live music, food truck, and outdoor adventure equipment vendors all of which will be available all weekend long.
This year they welcome back Hinterland Brewery out of Green Bay as the official recovery drink of the Wolfman! There will be a variety of Hinterland beer as well as other beverages for sale all weekend long. Join other Wolfman participants and spectators at the camp Saturday for musical entertainment. Saturday the music begins at 1:00 p.m. as the Wolfman welcomes back Tuck Pence. All are welcome to come and listen to this fantastic musician.
Wolfman is also a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, which collaborates with many local organizations resulting in a donation to each of the groups for their efforts. More than 160 people volunteer from these organizations that help contribute to the success of this event. All of this having a large influence on the community.
